Rodney Mullen

You do these things. So sometimes through all the years, all the years you lose sight of what...why you do it. For some time maybe you think you skate because you want be the best video part or... I wanted to win 10 Years' Contests and I did. And in the end I found it that wasn't why I skated. I lost years of really realizing why I love skateboarding. And now as I get older I get less in a sense of public skateboarding. And I go back to the original reason why I love this was to do new things in my own way. That's what I love with skateboarding.I've been injured a bunch of times.....not bunch but definitely a few surgeries. And when that happens I think "Oh, maybe I'm too old. I should give up or I want this award I want to skate the year. What does that mean? Before I got that I thought I made a lock. And then when I get it...it doesn't mean anything. That's realization when this comes. And sometimes I can see kids... they start skateboarding because they the freedom of it. It's freedom and it's art in a lot of ways. Then I see them along the way they start to hate skateboarding but they have to do it because they feel for some reason they don't know... they think it's because of money but they can quit and make money else....other ways. And I see it all the time---people that loved it , they get what theywanted and they hate it.And so it there's anything I could say to kids so they have to go all through the years like waste...like...just remember this---winnig awards winning contests, they really truely don't mean anything.Cos enjoyment of doing what you wanna do all the way through---that's the beauty of skateboarding. So many people never actually find their whole lives. And that's what skateboarding has given me.I can't wait to wake up in the morning to try something new.A lot of times I can't sleep because I can't wait to try something new. And how many people never really experienced that feeling often. That's why I skate.
